Former British consulate employee Cheng Man Kit Simon announced on January 9 midnight on Facebook that he decided to terminate relationships with his family in Hong Kong and China, in order to prevent them from being harrassed.
Cheng released the following statement:
“I hereby declare disconnection from my family in Hong Kong and the Mainland. What I do and say solely represents myself, it is not relevant to my family and relatives. I hope they can live in tranquility and peace, without external harassment and threat. We once loved and nurtured each other, now we better forget it, as we will take no more agony and worry.”
Cheng was abducted in the West Kowloon Terminus in Hong Kong and detained by Chinese authorities for 15 days in August for alleged ‘solicitation of prostitution’. He later revealed to BBC in an interview that he was forced to make the confession and was tortured and pressed for information about activists in the pro-democracy movement.
