On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Bill in support of the pro-democracy movement in this semi-autonomous Chinese City. The Chinese government immediately issued a statement to oppose the signing of the bill and threatened to retaliate.
The new law requires an annual review of Hong Kong’s autonomous status in order to keep its special trade status. The bill also allows the U.S. government to impose sanctions and travel restrictions on individuals who violate human rights in Hong Kong.
In a personal signing statement, Trump added that he had signed the bills “out of respect for President Xi (Jinping), China, and the people of Hong Kong. They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all.”
Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of Global Times, tweeted that “out of respect for President Trump, the US and its people, China is considering to put the drafters of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act on the no-entry list, barring them from entering Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao.”
The Global Times is a mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Regime.
This type of thuggish retaliatory response is no surprise for the China mainland netizens. They posted this inside the Great Firewall to mock the Communist Party. It reads:
Lets retaliate the paper tiger Americans. Please spread this message if you are a Chinese:
- All the children of the communist party members living oversea must return to China
- Sell all your oversea properties and donate the proceeds to the Chinese military
- Boycott all American products
- Destroy all American products especially iPhones
- surround the U.S. Embassy to stop them from issuing visas
