[China] Man says free Hong Kong. Man detained for five days

Liaoyang City, China— On November 8, 2019, a 40-year-old man, Wang Jing, was sentenced to 5 days of administrative detention by the local Police Station in northeast China. The reason for Wang’s arrest was that he posted a comment on HK protests in a Wechat Group, saying, ‘Hong Kong is the beacon of freedom, world’s Hong Kong, anywhere with freedom, without dictators or tyranny, becomes Hong Kong!’ The interrogation record, a Wechat post snapshot, and a cellphone detection report were used as criminal evidence.

In China, social media apps such as Wechat and TicTok are strictly monitored and censored by the government, leaving personal information vulnerable and accessible while allowing limited freedom of speech.
