June 4th, 2020. A tragic story happened in Changzhou, China. Miu Kexin, an excellent 5th-grade student at Jintan Riverside Primary School, committed suicide after Chinese class.

The home assignment required Kexin to write a review of a famous Chinese story, Monkey Subdues White-Skeleton Demon. She compared the demons to the hypocrites and suggested to be vigilant about those people in today’s society. However, her Chinese teacher didn’t like it a bit and said there was no “positive energy” in her writing. After harshly criticized by the teacher, Kexin jumped from the 4th floor of the school building.

The teacher’s comment on Kexin’s homework, asking Kexin to

                                                            express “positive energy”

“Positive energy” was first described by Richard Wiseman. In his definition, the positive energy is something that makes people either at work or in life feel a continuous driving force. However, in 2012 Xi Jinping and Wang Qishan, the senior leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), redefined “the Positive Energy” with the context of Socialism. After that “positive energy” was intentionally misinterpret by CCP propaganda. In China, any news, books, or TV shows criticizing the form of CCP government may have the possibility to be called out as spreading “negative energy” and to be banned from the market immediately. Meanwhile, in the education system from kindergartens to universities, students or educators were not encouraged to criticize any dark sides of the society, even though constructive feedback can help it to grow and prosper.

As all the other dictatorship regimens, on the first day the CCP government was founded, it never wants their people to know and discover the truth. Like what George Orwell wrote in his book 1984, the “big brother” believes the slogan “Ignorance is strength”. The CCP government utilize all the means of propaganda to trick their people in faking prosperity. This deprives people including educators of their independent thought and critical thinking. I still remember a couple of years ago when I went back to my primary school, a teacher immediately recognized me because there was a time I made a comment:  “anyone can make mistakes, including President Jiang, the former leader of the CCP”. She and her colleagues took this as a joke and thought I was a weirdo. It shocked me and made me fill hopeless about the education system under the ruling of CCP.

The police supervised and planned to disperse Kexin’s family

Ironically, when Kexin’s parents protested and asked someone to take responsibility, the school, the education department, and the local police passed the buck again. The school required other students’ parents to stand with the school. Meanwhile, the police harassed and threatened the people who spoke for Kexin’s family. Maybe the school and government thought what Kexin’s family did had no “positive energy and may bring a negative effect to the social harmony”. It is never about your life or your children’s lives or future; it is always about the stability of their totalitarian regime!
